تم إطلاق برنامج علوم المختبرات الطبية في عام 2010 وبلغ عدد الخريجين 326 خريجا حتى الآن. ويعد تخصص (علوم المختبرات الطبية) من التخصصات المرغوبة في القطاعات الصحية بالمملكة العربية السعودية، و يمتلك خريجو هذا التخصص من الكلية القدرات المعرفية اللازمة لأداء مهامهم في المعامل والمختبرات الصحية.

Courses

This course outlines some important principles underlying biological processes. It begins with a discussion of the properties of the living organisms which leads to cytological studies covering aspects of cell structure, cell membrane, and membrane transport processes followed by cell division including gametogenesis. Emphasis is placed on the biological roles of energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Also, digestion, absorption, the chemical nature of foods, assessment of nutritional status, introduction to human genetics, cellular respiration and other related topics were be given. On completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate understanding of life at the molecular and cellular levels.

This course focus on the fundamental principles of General Chemistry basic to the understanding of the health related sciences. Principles of atomic structure, periodicity, chemical bonding, molecular structure, states of matter, acids and bases, concentration units, kinetics, equilibria, and electrochemistry will be discussed. Additionally, fundamentals of organic nomenclature and a survey of the properties of the main organic functional groups will be covered. Laboratory portion of the course provides first hand experiences that inform, illustrate, expand, and reinforce major concepts discussed in lecture.

This course focuses on the English language skills required for students with basic level of English. It integrates all four skills reading, writing, listening and speaking .It includes materials and activities required for proper teaching and learning of English language for this level.

The course reinforces basic math skills which are used widely in calculus. These skills encompass the ability to solve mathematical problems, analyze and develop the students' comprehension of the course material in English. The topics include Elementary Arithmetic, Elementary Algebra, Advanced Algebra, Plane Geometry, Trigonometric Functions, and Statistics.

هذا المقرر يشتملُ على المهارات اللغوية الأساسية: الاستماع، والتحدث، والقراءة، والكتابة، والمعتمدة في تطبيقها على نصوص متعددة، تمثِّلُ المجالات الأساسية التالية: أصوات اللغة ونحوها وصرفها ودلالاتها. كما أنه يركز على الأهمية الدينية واللغوية والقومية والأدبية والثقافية لتعلُّم اللغة العربية، وأضاف إليها التذوق اللغوي البلاغي لجماليات النصوص المختارة من القرآن الكريم والحديث النبوي الشريف والشعر العربي والمقطوعات النثرية، التي تمثِّلُ أرقى النصوص اللغوية العربية في ألفاظها وتراكيبها وأساليبها ومضامينها

Biology II is a second level biology course that allows the students to study advanced topics in biology. This course consolidates and extends the student’s knowledge and understanding of human biology. It covers the structure and function of the Musculoskeletal, Nervous, Sensory, Endocrine, Circulatory, Excretory and Reproductive systems.

This course is designed for students with basic level of English as a second language who need English language skills as a means of studying Medical Laboratory Sciences. It integrates all four skills reading, writing, listening and speaking .This course contains students with material and activities in order to achieve better communicative and written skills.

Study of prefixes, suffixes, and root words of medical terms and their meaning, spelling, and Pronunciation. Emphasis on building a working medical vocabulary based on body systems.

The course offers information on the historical origins of human health sciences as different disciplines. It teaches human health sciences holistically from historical perspectives giving emphasis on nursing, physiotherapy and other related allied health professions, and how health care was practiced in ancient cultures and old civilizations. Then, we will shed the light on and discuss the emergence of university-based health care education globally and how it was improved.

هذا المقرر يشتمل على مصادر التشريع الإسلامي الأربعة، وهي: القرآن، والسنة، والإجماع، والقياس، ويبرز حاجة الإنسان لهذا التشريع في كل زمان ومكان. كما يركز على أهمية إلمام الطالب بوسائل التشريع الإسلامي في بيان الحكم الفقهي في القضايا المستجدة والمعاصرة في واقع الحياة، وكذلك يركز على خصيصة الاجتهاد الجماعي، ودور المجامع الفقهية فيها

This course provides a conceptually-based exposure to the fundamental principles and processes of the physical world. Topics include basic concepts of motion, forces, energy, heat, electricity, magnetism, nuclear, atomic physics and the properties of matter. Upon completion, students should be able to describe examples and applications of the studied principles.

This course is concerned with studying the anatomy of different systems of the human body. It covers cardiovascular system, lymphatic system, digestive system, endocrine system, blood, respiratory system, urinary system, reproductive system, musculo-skeletal system, nervous system, muscular system, and the special senses (vision, hearing, balance, taste and smell).

يعدُّ هذا المقرر مهنيا واحترافيا للطالب الجامعي في الميادين اللغوية، حيث إنه يجمع بين النظرية والتطبيق، فيتناول الجوانب المتعلقة بالتحرير الكتابي، ثمَّ يعزِّزُها بتدريب الطلبة على الكتابة الصحيحة، والتعبير السليم، وتجنُّب الأخطاء الكتابية الشائعة، ويركِّزُ المقرر على تقديم نماذج تطبيقية، وتدريبات عملية، يمكن من خلالها قياس مدى التحصيل العلمي، واكتساب المهارات التحريرية.

The course illustrates the basics of biochemistry and the structure of different biomolecules such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids and their different classes. This course also explains the structure and kinetics of enzymes and highlights the chemistry and mode of actions of hormones. In addition, this course identifies types, structure, and function of water-soluble, fat-soluble vitamins, and body fluids.

This course introduces students to Latin and Greek prefixes, suffixes and word root and method of combining them together to come up with sound medical terminology related to different body systems and organs. It also deals with diseases and medical procedures related to these systems and medical abbreviations used in medical field.

هذا المقرر يشتمل على ثلاثة محاور رئيسة وهي: نظام الأسرة في الإسلام: حيث يوضح منهج الإسلام في بناء الأسرة، والمحافظة عليها، وكيفية التعامل مع الخلافات الزوجية، وقضايا الأسرة المعاصرة والنظام الاجتماعي في الإسلام: ويركز على مقومات المجتمع الإسلامي وخصائصه، وأهم مؤسساته، وأبرز المشكلات الاجتماعية، وكيفية حلها والإسلام والقضايا المعاصرة: ويركز على اكتساب الطالب القدرة على الحوار، وشرح حقوق الإنسان في الإسلام، وكيفية التعامل مع العولمة، وتطبيق قواعد الأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر، وبيان موقف الإسلام من الإرهاب

The course focuses on the mechanical, physical and biochemical function of the human body systems. It includes the cardiovascular system, lymphatic system and body defenses, digestive system, endocrine system, blood, respiratory system, nervous system and the special senses (eye, ear balance, taste and smell.

The course is designed to study metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and storage and expression of genetic information including DNA replication, transcription and translation. The course illustrating the metabolites of the major metabolic pathways in the human body and identifying the various enzymes and cofactors necessary for each reaction and explain the disorders occurring in each pathways.

This course focuses on introducing students to number of known computer applications that are essential for the completion of any major in college. The outline of the course will take the student from the basic computer knowledge tools،combining both theoretical and applied skills، to gradually moving towards more advanced skills. Computer applications introduce the student to broad view of computer used.

This course illustrates the basics principles of human genetics, Mendelian genetics, mitosis, meiosis, chromosomes and mutations. The course also includes some clinical applications of genetics, such as genetic screening and counseling, gene recombination and genetic mapping.

This course will focuses on important basic topics which are preparatory to other courses in medical laboratory technology and clinical curriculum, that include:

  • Host-parasite relationships and the role of the opportunistic pathogens in humans.
  • The epidemiology of the most common disease-causing organisms, with an emphasis on understanding the methods of pathogenicity and mode of transmission so as to prevent and control infection.
  • The fundamentals of the immune response to infections. A retrospective explanation on the emergence of HIV and an awareness of newly emerging disease threats such as Ebola & SARS.

The course provides an introduction to the concepts and theories of psychology and to their application to real life situations, as well as the biological and environmental factors affecting human behavior. Topics include introduction to concepts of psychology, biological bases of behavior, research methods in psychology, sensation and perception, motivation and emotions, psychology of learning, psychology of personality, health stress and coping, abnormal psychology, and treatment modalities for psychological disorders.

This course is focuses on terms, concepts, procedures, and equipment used in professional laboratory. Topics include: professional ethics and regularity agencies: basic laboratory safety, equipment and techniques, phlebotomy/specimen processes; quality control concepts; processing environment; documentation; and point of care testing. Practical experience in phlebotomy will be provided in the lab and/or the clinical setting.

The course concentrates on the ways in which disease can be diagnosed and monitored using plasma, serum, urine and other body fluids. The course outlines the area of routine investigations commonly used by physicians such as determination of blood gases, electrolytes, metabolic disorders testing, tumor markers and enzymes profile. The course is also designed to show the importance, interpretation and clinical correlation of such investigation

This course is designed to introduce students to important topics which are preparatory to other courses in Medical laboratory technology and clinical curriculum. The course involves a study of major topics in clinical microbiology and clinical immunology, but covering the basic elements only in each case. The course incorporates a practical study unit, which introduces students to some of the fundamentals principles and techniques met in the lectures

This course focuses on blood cells components and the effects of disease upon them. It brings a general aspect of blood cells development, maturation, and their functions. The students are introduced to a different range of hematological investigations, upon which the clinical diagnosis is founded. Blood coagulation is also introduced at the basic level, in preparation for the hematology II course.

This course outlines the normal histology of the different human tissues and aims to develop students' ability to prepare the tissue for microscopic study. The course emphasizes practical skills, such as tissue processing, embedding and microtomy. The student is introduced to a number of special techniques, such as cryostat and immunostaining procedures. The student will be prepared to assume a position in histopathology department of a hospital laboratory.

This course is designed to introduce students to the world of biostatistics using epidemiological aspects and knowledge. This includes the skill of data collection, classification, reporting and analysis using various statistical approaches that have been currently used in the field. This course also familiarizes the students with the aspects of quality control/assurance, in addition to the principles of the means, standard deviation, standard error, coefficient of variation as well as graphical techniques.

This course describes the structure and function of the electron microscope. It describes the electron microscopy in two types, the scanning electron microscopy and the transmission electron microscopy. It also describes specimen preparation until its final stages and obtaining the EM photographic pictures. It also deals with all problems which might occur during the EM work, and how it would be prevented. It also includes the lab safety and quality control of the electron microscopy unit.

General concepts of pathophysiology are discussed within this course with appropriate covering to the general pathologic process due to cellular stress. An organ system review of the commonest disease with adequate insight into causes, clinical manifestations and diagnosis will be covered.

The course outlines the endocrine hormone synthesis, metabolism and diagnosis of endocrine diseases together with guidance on their interpretation. It also concentrates on the normal and abnormal function of GIT, liver, pancreas and kidney and tests used for investigation of such functions. The course is also designed to outline the important role that the clinical biochemistry plays in the monitoring the therapeutic use of certain drugs, and drug abuse screening. Trace element metabolism and disorders are also outlined on the course.

This course covers the bacterial classification and the defining features of which bacteria can be differentiated from other types of microorganisms, as well as covering clinical diseases that are associated with specific bacterial agents and their related virulence factors. The methods of isolation, laboratory identification and antimicrobial susceptibility of different bacteria will be discussed in details

This course discusses the important features of fungi including isolation, growth, identification techniques as well as treatment. Various infections caused by molds and yeast including their etiologies are also addressed. The course include the following:

  • Identification features of the fungi-caused infection.
  • Fungi classification.
  • * Optimal sites for specimen collection.
  • * Commonly used laboratory diagnostic procedures.
  • * Fungi optimal growth and recovery.
  • * Safety precautions followed in the laboratory.

The course focuses on the etiology and diagnosis of disorders that are related to blood cells diseases such as anemia, leukemia and clotting disorders. These topics will be introduced deeply at the level of pathophysiology and laboratory finding.

This course is designed to include the fundamental concepts and principles of immunology and serology. It will deal with the immune system. Its basic function in the general health and its response to infection and disease in the human body. The practical component includes the principles and methodology involved in specimen-processing and serologic tests used to assist in diagnosis and effective treatment and vaccine in selected diseases.

This course seals with parasites of medical importance. It elaborates on their classification, life cycles, vectors and methods of transmission, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of parasitic disease are also discussed

This course includes the principles of instrumentations and methods is essential for clinical laboratory scientist, which can be utilized to ensure adequate usage of instruments with enough knowledge of how these instruments work and how to interpret the data generated from each sample. This includes the methods and principles behind each one of the instruments.

This course tailored for students to enable them to deals with most of the bacterial diseases as related to body system. It includes the following;

  • Advance study of host-parasite relationship.
  • Mechanisms of bacterial pathogenesis and laboratory diagnosis of different bacterial infections of different body sites.
  • It also includes the theoretical and practical aspects of antimicrobial agents, their modes of action, methods of evaluation and susceptibility testing and mechanisms of microbial resistance.

Performance of routine blood banking procedures including blood group, and Rh typing, and antibody screens.

This course is designed to provide student with required knowledge, cognitive and skills required in the molecular field. It introduces students to the related terminology, molecular methods used and analysis skills required to interpret the data gathered. This includes analysis of the structure and functions of nucleic acids at the molecular level. Also, students will learn molecular techniques that are used in molecular diagnosis of genetic disorders and are also used to diagnose certain infective diseases.

This course is designed to provide students with the fundamental principles and detailed knowledge of medically important viruses and the interaction of these viruses with host cells during viral infection. Also, understanding of viral infections and their relationship to disease in humans. General topics include virus structure, virus replication, virus pathogenesis, cultivation of viruses, laboratory diagnosis of viruses, treatment and control of viruses.

The course involves the basic principle of total quality management perspective for a laboratory testing service and application of quality assurance program in clinical laboratory. Quality control basics provide the essentials for performing statistical QC procedure in service laboratories. It covers the principles, terminology, and practices of common QC procedures, such as the Levey-Jennings control charts and the Westgard multirole technique.

This course includes the clinical laboratory practice and leadership with emphasis placed on management styles, motivational techniques, communication skills, organizational leadership, and administration of personnel. It also includes a better understanding of management and leadership theories for an effective performance in the clinical setting.
