The master of Psychiatric & Mental Health Nursing program at Fakeeh College for Medical Sciences is intended for registered nurses wishing to undertake a specialist qualification in Psychiatric & Mental Health Nursing; it is designed for students who are seeking advanced practice roles in this field of nursing. The program also provides opportunities to study issues and topics of particular interest such as psychological and psycho-educational interventions, mental health care for illness management, recovery and mental health in primary care. The Master of Psychiatric & Mental Health Nursing program prepares nurse practitioner to enter workplace with knowledge, skills and abilities essential to implement the full scope of nursing practice or as nurse educator.

Courses

This course serves as the basis for providing informed nursing care that based on nursing theories. It represents a solid foundation to describe, analyze, critique and evaluate various nursing activities and to explore the relationship of nursing theories with clinical practice and nursing research.

This course emphasis on multiple aspects of assessment including physical, functional, and mental health assessment. The course is designed to enable the student to develop nursing diagnostic reasoning skills to perform complete health assessments on selected clients, obtaining an in-depth health history, performing a comprehensive physical examination using a systems approach, differentiate normal from abnormal, recording findings and developing a problem list and treatment plan.

This course focuses on pathophysiologic concepts related to altered biological processes affecting adult individuals across the lifespan. The course describes the general pathologic mechanisms producing signs and symptoms of specific disease processes commonly encountered in nursing practice. Moreover, it identifies how each organ system participates in the total regulatory and homeostatic mechanisms of the body.

This course is designed to introduce students to obtain advanced knowledge about principles of epidemiology, risk factors of chronic diseases, methods used to describe diseases in populations, apply epidemiologic principles of evaluation, prevention & therapeutic interventions. The course also emphasis on critiquing epidemiologic and statistical evidence for health promotion, screening, and disease prevention across the life span.

Research Methodology course provides master students with a basic understanding of the research process. The course provides an overview of quantitative and qualitative approaches in nursing research, and the analytical tools required to critically evaluate research reports. The course emphasizes the rights of human research subjects. Students are requested to prepare a research proposal step by step for a topic of their interest related to nursing. Furthermore, the course provides the students with approaches and tools to address nursing research and problems in order to successfully conceptualize, plan, carry out, and write a research proposal and project.

The course is designed to addresses the advanced practice psychiatric/mental nurse practitioner role in multiple settings and specific psychiatric and mental disorders from historical and contemporary perspectives. This course also examines issues and concepts in the specialized areas of Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing, and it focuses on the promotion of the care of clients experiencing Psychiatric and Mental Health problems. The course utilizes theoretical concepts and builds on the knowledge and skills of the student in the care of the client, families and the community with psychological disorders, and in the nursing management of specific disorders

The course is designed to examine the major classes of psychopharmacological agents on neurobiological function with a particular emphasis on the clinical management of target psychiatric symptoms, purpose of use, action, common interactions and contraindications, effects and side effects, drugs of abuse, and management of advanced practice of psychotropic drugs.

This course will provide master students with required knowledge and skills in the field of counseling and psychotherapy practice, including its approaches, models, techniques and ethical considerations. This course is to provide an overview of current methods of psychological intervention, with a strong emphasis on empirically supported forms of treatment. Students can expect to learn about many widely used cognitive and behavioral methods, including relaxation procedures, cognitive restructuring, exposure-based treatments, skills training, and mindfulness and acceptance-based approaches. Other topics to be addressed include working with children and multicultural populations and psychotherapy outcome. Students can also expect to become familiar with some of the available manuals for treating a variety of problems

This course is designed for master student to acquire advanced Psychiatry and Mental Health Nursing skills, through demonstration various psychiatric nursing management & intervention for psychiatric disorders and utilize different approaches of Treatment Modalities such as, cognitive-behavioral therapy, interpersonal, group, family therapies, & behavioral therapy will be covered for different mental health disorders.
This course focuses on selected specific psychotherapy models relevant to the advance practice of psychiatric nursing to achieve quality outcomes for individuals, families and groups with psychiatric disorders.

This course is designed to prepare Master students for conducting their own research project toward the end of their degree by consolidating all relevant research principles and activities needed for this endeavor as well as strengthening students’ autonomy, creativity, self-reliance, and critical thinking abilities. The course will review main principles of research in the nursing field, it will discuss in detail the steps of constructing a research proposal for both academic and funding purposes, and it will introduce students to principles of reading and critiquing research reports. Students will also be introduced to professional scientific writing of research articles for publication in terms of structure, format, contents, and style. Finally, students will learn the process of publishing a research report and the many issues related to this activity such as the choice of scientific journal, copyright issues, publication ethics, impact factor, and plagiarism.

Level 4 Thesis MSN 411 This course is designed to provide the student regular, organized opportunity and follow up guidance for their thesis work from the supervisor (s) at different stages of the thesis work plan.
