Introduction

The PharmD program at FCMS is committed to providing a distinctive undergraduate educational experience that prepares Doctor of Pharmacy students during their undergraduate studies for clinical and non-clinical pharmacy practices, postgraduate training, and further studies and specialization.

The FCMS provides students and other stakeholders with detailed information on the PharmD program specifications. This includes required and elective courses, modules, credit-hour requirements, and college requirements together with details of the courses to be taken each year or semester. (Program Specification).

The PharmD curriculum includes a six-year annual undergraduate degree program. It consists of three phases. It applies an interdisciplinary thematic approach, integrating biomedical and clinical sciences with communication skills, and clinical training at hospitals and other primary healthcare facilities. The learning environment is organized to provide appropriate facilities with flexibility in time, place, and style of learning according to international standards.

The PharmD program is structured as an integrated spiral curriculum according to the National Qualification Framework for Higher Education in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Its learning strategies include interactive lectures, Team-Based Learning (TBL), Problem-Based Leaning (PBL), and tutorial sessions, together with student presentations and small-group learning supported by appropriate clinical experience. Such learning activities employ various delivery strategies at both hospitals and community-based facilities.

The PharmD program promotes a culture that enhances teamwork, collaboration, critical thinking, scientific inquiry, lifelong learning, time management, and service delivery. Those elements are embraced by PharmD students and recognized as important pillars of effective care delivery in clinical practice. In addition, students should recognize that the assessments at various phases of the program are designed to recognize achievements and development rather than reward superficial learning. The assessments are constructive and recognize the development of key attributes and qualities rather than reward short-term superficial learning.

Computer skills course focuses on the fundamentals of various computer applications that are crucial for Pharm D students in building their computer knowledge tools (theoretical and practical skills) that will enable them to continue their six years study.

This course focuses on the main theme of basic mathematics and calculus. It is designed to help students become proficient in basic math skills used to solve pharmacy calculations. Its applications involving rates of change and the approximation of functions by applying the fundamental rules of differentiation.

This course focuses on application of physical roles in the problems related to the drug manufacturing and administrations. It addresses the theme of kinetic energy, forces and motions of drug particles

Human Cell Biology course focuses on the basic concepts in biology, cellular organelles and their function, the construction and function of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins. In addition to that it covers, anatomy and physiology of major organ systems such as digestive, nervous, respiratory, endocrine, musculoskeletal and reproductive systems in addition to the special senses (eye, ear, taste and smell).

Biostatistics BISD 101 course focuses on descriptive statistical methods used for collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of data obtained from biological studies It also addresses the application of different statistical tests to measure central tendency and dispersion from the mean; performing the regression analysis and correlation coefficient of the data; evaluating the methods of toxicological analysis of LD50.

The General Chemistry course discusses fundamental principles of general chemistry, basic to the understanding of the health-related sciences. It covers topics ranging from principles of atomic structure, periodicity, chemical bonding to the descriptions of chemical reactivity and reactions equilibrium, quantitative methods in chemistry, reactions in aqueous media, and basic inorganic chemistry and physical chemistry

This course provides overview about the characteristics of patient-centered pharmaceutical care and focus on the crucial roles of effective listening and empathic communication in building trustworthy relationships with patients. This course also will present the most common approaches to interviewing patients and assessing their needs as the effective collecting and organizing of patient data is built on strong listening, interviewing, and assessment skills.

Furthermore, this course focuses on the most appropriate strategies to help patients with their medication management issues and effective communication skills.

As well as, this course describes the role of communication in minimizing medication errors and improving patient safety and provides insights into inter-professional communication and the development of critical collaborative relationships with other health care providers to enhance patient care.

English Language II course focuses on general vocabulary presented in texts and the basic skills for writing and reading comprehensible passages and reports based on selected materials. It deals with comprehension of spoken language and the ability to recognize and accurately interpret target vocabulary presented in a variety of aural contexts.

The Medical terminology course focuses on the organization of the body, suffixes, prefixes, medical specialists. Also, the meanings, spellings, and pronunciation will be stressed on throughout the course. It includes medical terms using common combining forms, suffixes, and prefixes; naming different body systems and their functions; analysis and spelling of medical terms related to organs and tissues of the body; and recognition of the meaning of various pathological terms, laboratory tests, and commonly performed procedures.

The course is designed to provide the students with basic knowledge and skills about the structure of different systems of the body and their clinical correlation which is necessary for the professional training of the pharmacist. In this context, particular emphasis will be placed on the study of the microscopic structure of the various tissues and organs.

This course focus on normal function of human body from molecular to an integrated level. This is accomplished by addressing the function of systems in relation to structure. This course prepares the student to clearly identify any deviation from normal while learning disease patterns later on. The course covers the basics of cell physiology, muscle contraction, ECG and the principles of homeostasis.

This course is designed specifically for Pharm D students. The lectures contents cover the basic information of microbiology, with clinical aspects of infectious diseases relevant to pharmacology practices. Principles of transmission, infection control and treatment of infections will also be covered.

This course is designed to introduces student to the profession of pharmacy and the role of the pharmacist within health care delivery including the roles and responsibilities of a pharmacist in relation to pharmaceutical care. The course considers the context of pharmacy practice and describes the legislative, ethical, professional standards and national policy programs framework in which the profession of pharmacy operates. In addition to that the legislation relating to the practice of pharmacy, drug manufacture and development, communication skills, ethics and professionalism are important competencies for pharmacists and this course will cover those aspects will be addressed.

Pharmaceutical Organic chemistry focuses on the fundamental theories and basic physical and chemical properties of the major classes of organic compounds, including stereo-chemical properties of organic compounds.

The course provides the students with information about fundamentals of Pharmaceutical Calculations needed in pharmacy practice. Topics include interpretation of prescription and medication orders, ratio and proportion, dosage determinations, percentage preparations, reducing and enlarging formulas, dilution and concentration, aliquots, specific gravity and density, flow rates, calculations involving contemporary compounding, calculations associated with dose and patient parameters.

Biochemistry PHMD 212 course focuses on carbohydrate, lipid, protein chemistry and metabolism. The structure of allosteric proteins and collagen, identification of enzymes & coenzymes, principles of thermodynamics and bioenergetics are also covered in this course, Moreover, integration in the metabolism of these macromolecules in fed and fast cycle is also highlighted.

This course is designed to make the student acquainted with normal function of human body from molecular to an integrated level. This is accomplished by introducing the student to function of systems in relation to structure. In this fashion this course prepares the student to clearly identify any deviation from normal while learning disease patterns later on.

This course consists of a detailed description of the immunology against microbial infections and the ways of prevention of some of them through vaccines as well as the immune mechanisms against cancer. It also addresses some types of laboratory tests. This course also contains an explanation of immunological diseases such as allergies, types and methods of diagnosis and methods of treatment immunologically in addition to autoimmune diseases and immune deficiency and their mechanisms and methods of diagnosis.

The course focuses on the physicochemical considerations, formulation factors, administration route and relative bioavailability. This is further illustrated in practical sessions where students prepare selected dosage forms and package them in suitable related containers.

Pharmaceutical organic chemistry course II is a continuation and complementary to Pharmaceutical organic chemistry I course. The course completes the coverage of organic chemistry topics. The general topics of the course cover nomenclature, physical properties (with emphasis on water and lipid solubility), chemical properties (the stability and instability of a functional group to normal in vitro environmental conditions), and metabolism (the stability or instability of a functional group in vivo body, environment). Chemical reactions will be only addressed when they related to the physical or chemical stability and mechanism of action of drugs. The course provides background on essential materials

This course reviews the pathophysiology of common diseases of different body systems. It serves as a foundation for the integrated pharmacotherapy courses. It provides an in-depth study of human pathological processes and their effects on homeostasis. Emphasis is given interrelationships among organ systems in deviations from homeostasis.

Pharmacology of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory is discussed in this course. The classification, pharmacokinetic characteristics, mechanism of action, therapeutic uses, possible adverse effects, drug interactions, pediatric and geriatric indications and associated problems are also covered. Disease-Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs as Methotrexate and Leflunomide are also included in this part of the course besides drugs used for the treatment of gout. In a similar fashion the pharmacological aspects of Opioids, Analgesia, and Pain Management are covered, in addition to the possible abuse potential of these type of drugs. In the second part of the course, drugs used for modulation of cardiovascular function are addressed. Important emphasis on drugs used for regulation of Renal Function, the control of hypertension. Other classes of drugs used for management of cardiovascular disorders including, Congestive Heart Failure, Anti-arrhythmics, Hypercholesterolemia and Anticoagulants/Anti-Pallets are covered.

The course additionally covers concepts of drug ionization, drug-receptor binding interactions, bioisosterism, stereochemistry, molecular modification, prodrugs design, and the principles of mechanism- and structure-based drug design. Moreover, the biotransformation reactions involved in drug metabolism, and factors that influence these in vivo reactions are investigated. In the second part, the course covers drugs that act on the eicosanoid, histaminergic, cholinergic, and adrenergic systems with specific emphasis on the structure activity relationships, and the effect of molecular structure on drug’s mechanism of action, ADME properties, and therapeutic uses.

This course focuses on implementation of a strategy to address successfully and as well as helps students can evaluate the suitability of a business strategy, it also analyzing the marketing plan in which it is based, thus ensuring the desired results for the institution. This course involved principles of pharmaceutical marketing for pharmaceutical marketing to meet the challenges encountering on the way to the success of the brands management, community pharmacists interested in learning to develop and implement a strategic and tactical marketing plan, and a pharmacist specialized in commercial and marketing areas.

This course will focus on the biopharmaceutical considerations and physicochemical foundation of various dosage forms; namely dispersed systems and solutions dosage forms. Discussion includes interfacial phenomenon, flow properties, different types of dispersed systems and its pharmaceutical applications such as suspensions, emulsions. Also, this course covers reaction kinetics, reaction orders, and factors affecting the rate of the reaction and discusses different stability testing of pharmaceuticals. Additionally, it focuses on different types of sterile dosage forms, their routes of administration, and sterilization techniques.

This course follows a body-system approach to assessment. The course focuses on thorough knowledge of anatomy, physiology and common patient examination techniques. This course introduces the Pharm D student to pharmacy practice as it relates to patient interaction and patient evaluation.

The course focuses on role of the public health pharmacist as well as expanding areas for community and public health involvement. This course covers practice experience in a community setting.

This course includes two parts; the first part covered the skills in obtaining and utilizing drug information references and how to use a systemic approach to answer drug questions. The second part covered how to analyze, evaluate designed, and executed clinical trials evaluation.

This is an introductory course in research methods and proposal writing. The course is designed to give students experience in hypothesis and specific aims development and an overview of the use of the scientific study design for solving health-related problems.

Biopharmaceutics is the science that examines the interrelationships between physicochemical properties of a drug, the dosage form, specific formulation, and route by which it is administered on the one hand, and the rate and extent of drug absorption into the systemic circulation and distribution to the tissues where it produces its actions (desired and undesired) on the other hand.

This course will introduce the students to the Saudi Arabian law and the legal system related to pharmacy practice and pharmaceuticals from SFDA, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Interior Affair, Islamic ethics regulations, and SCHS. The course focuses on brief overview of the legal system including nature and sources of Islamic and national. law, and distinguishing administrative. The Saudi Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act, related Amendments, and other important laws governing the regulation of medications.

This course reviews the pharmacotherapy, Renal, Fluid, & Electrolyte Disorders, and Cardiovascular Disorders with primary focus on evidence-based practice to provide a pharmaceutical care for these disorders. It serves as a foundation for the delivery of pharmaceutical care by focusing on (those disorders. Moreover, this course will provide an overview of the clinical presentation and pathophysiology of Renal, Fluid, & Electrolyte Disorders, and Cardiovascular Disorders. An overview of non-pharmacologic therapies will be introduced to the extent relevant to the pharmacists. At the end of the course, students will be expected to apply evidence-based practice to provide a pharmaceutical care for these disorders and design an appropriate pharmacotherapeutic plan for specific patients and to appropriately counsel patients regarding proper use of the different renal failures, electrolytes disturbances and cardiovascular medications that covered in the course.

This course focuses on the necessary knowledge and skills regarding the various health insurance systems and the characteristics of national and international health systems, and to know the administrative and health aspects related to health insurance and how to deal with health care organizations

Pharmaceutical Biotechnology PHMD 414 provides knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary for success in the pharmacy profession and focuses on definitions used in genetic engineering, gene cloning system & steps involved in gene cloning, cloning vectors & insertion inactivation, finding the right clones, cloning and expression of mammalian gene in bacteria & reaching the required Eukaryotic gene, production & applications of monoclonal antibodies, production of human insulin & current FDA approved drugs, transgenic plants & animals, genetic engineered vaccines, application of genetic engineering in environmental clean-up and energy production, gene therapy, animal tissue culture as well as industrial microbiology including industrial microorganisms and its sources, properties, maintenance, strain improvement, types of microbial metabolites. Large scale production of important metabolites e.g. streptomycin, tetracycline, vitamin B12, amino acids & organic acids (lactic acid, gluconic acid & citric acid) and enzyme immobilization & improvement of microbial production.

This course is focuses on successful application of natural products in diseases therapy. General aspects of herbal drugs including their quality, safety and efficacy as well as their appropriate use in treatment of diseases and important herb-drug interactions are demonstrated throughout the course.

This course includes the background and knowledge base from which societal and administrative decisions can be initiated in different pharmacy environments. A number of critical factors shaping the health policies in the Saudi Arabia and around the world emphasize the need for increased attention concerning the role of pharmaceuticals and the pharmacy practitioner in new and old systems of health care.

This course reviews the pharmacotherapy of Endocrine Disorders, Respiratory Disorders, Urologic Disorders, Gynecologic and Obstetric Disorders and Immunologic Disorders with primary focus on evidence-based practice to provide a pharmaceutical care for these disorders. It serves as a foundation for the delivery of pharmaceutical care by focusing on (those disorders. Moreover, this course will provide an overview of the clinical presentation and pathophysiology of selected disorders. An overview of non-pharmacologic therapies will be introduced to the extent relevant to the pharmacists.

This course will cover the fundamentals of pharmacy practice in the hospital pharmacy setting. The course is a combination of didactic and experiential learning. The experiential component includes observation, application of current learning, and feedback and assessment between the student, the preceptor, and others at the practice site. Students will shadow a mentor pharmacist for 8 hours onsite in a hospital setting.

The course covers information related to the benefits and contraindications of using particular alternative therapies which mainly based on five therapeutic concepts; Manipulative and bodybased; Biologically based therapies; Energy healing therapies and Mind–body interventions and Alternative medical systems. It highlights the phytotherapeutic approach of different diseases and selection of the galenical preparations. It delivers the information about the natural beauty and function foods. Finally, provides information about the Ayurvedic herbal medicine and its relation to Chinese herbal medicine.

Pharmacokinetics is the science of the kinetics (rates) of drug absorption, distribution and elimination in an in-vivo system. The course provides a conceptual and quantitative background in the pharmacokinetic theory and the basic applications. It includes the study of the physiological, physicochemical, and formulation factors impact on drug disposition, and introduces the pharmacokinetic variabilities to help understand clinical variability to drug response. In addition, the course discusses the concepts of bioavailability and bioequivalence studies.

This course provides a comprehensive understanding & knowledge in the area of pharmaceutical formulation and production, and its underpinning science and processing technologies. Particularly theoretical aspects of pharmaceutical industry’s keywords such as preformulation considerations, optimization, manufacturing, development, and quality assurance of these activities.

This course covers the principles of Pharmacoeconomics, the fundamental topics and the terminology used in pharmacoeconomic research. It also focuses on different types and measurement of pharmaceutical costs and outcomes, analysis in pharmacoeconomic techniques such as cost-benefit analysis, cost- effective analysis, cost-utility analysis, cost-minimization analysis, and cost-consequence analysis. It also addresses the fundamental topics and the Terminology used in pharmacoeconomic research in addition to examples in evaluating published research.

This course reviews the pharmacotherapy of Neurologic Disorders, and Infectious Diseases with primary focus on evidence-based practice to provide a pharmaceutical care for these disorders. It serves as a foundation for the delivery of pharmaceutical care by focusing on those disorders. This course focuses on various aspects of pharmacy services including technical or functional, professional and administrative services and how to apply them in daily practices. List the steps of the medication use process and explain the role of pharmacy and other disciplines in the process, including a focus on transitions steps.

This course includes physiologic and biochemical processes influence the fate of drugs in the body. The interrelationship between the physicochemical properties of the drug and the rate/extent of absorption will be explored. Mathematical modeling of the plasma concentration time curves following drug administration will constitute a major part of the course. Fundamental pharmacokinetic principles and quantitative relationships will be used to determine approaches in designing dosage regimens, evaluating pharmacologic response and explaining mechanisms of drug- drug interactions. Exercises and tutorials to understand the concepts covered in the lectures so that students acquire skills for the use and application of pharmacokinetic data in drug regimens in clinical practice.

Quality control of drugs course provides a brief overview of key drug quality concepts, standards and practices for the finished products in quality control labs. The course focuses on GMP regulations regarding product manufacturing, processing, packaging and holding. The course covers the various methods for evaluation of pharmaceutical dosage forms according to BP or USP, the roles of quality assurance (QA), quality control (QC) process in ensuring the safety, efficacy and quality of finished drug products. The course discusses Quality by Design (QbD), Critical Quality Attributes (CQA), Risk Assessment/Management, and Process Analytical Technologies (PAT). The course covers also industry-standard methods as change control, SOPs, qualification/validation, release testing, specifications, and deviations.

The course will cover the characteristics of and types of entrepreneurs, identifying obstacles and opportunities, inventive problem solving, developing a practical business model and entrepreneurial ethics.
